Argentina Bound

Hello,
My name is Rebecca Sherouse and I am 14 years old. I am a sophomore at Santa Monica High School in Santa Monica California, and have decided to travel abroad to Argentina for the second semester of this school year through AFS (American Field Service). AFS is an international non-profit organization that provides inter cultural learning opportunities to help students develop the knowledge skills and understanding needed to help create a more just and peaceful world. My departure date is February 23rd, 2010.

When I get to Argentina I will live with a host family and become a complete part of Argentinean culture. I will go to a local school with my "brother" or "sister" from my host family and live alongside them
becoming fluent in Spanish along the way. All my life I have wanted to study abroad, and with AFS I get the chance to travel and learn about the people and lifestyles in my host country. On my trip I hope to gain a sense of independence, a better knowledge of the world and I hope to learn more about who I am as a person, and the decisions and actions that will shape my character in years to come. I am also interested in political diplomacy and communication as a possible career for the future and I believe this experience will help me understand more about the world.

At school in Santa Monica I play on the tennis team, sing in the choir, take part in student government, and participate in Circle of Friends and Samohi Solar Alliance. At home I love to play the piano, read, and write short stories. I also am part of the Honors Society and the Sophomore class representative. My life is a whirlwind a lot of the time, but I love every aspect of it and try to embrace the craziness as much as I can.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to study abroad. I know that many teenagers don't have the chance to have an experience like this, so that is why I am extremely dedicated to making my dream a reality.

The program recommends that I head up my own fundraising campaign to raise money for the semester abroad. Therefore, I am asking for your assistance. My goal is to raise $4,000 towards the cost of my trip. I am working on that goal by babysitting, having yard sales, lemonade stands, teaching tennis and tutoring. However, I still need a little more help to achieve my goal. Whatever you are able to give is GREATLY appreciated. I know that times are tough, but no amount is too small. Click on the ChipIn gadget on my sight and help me with my journey by making a secure non tax-deductible donation. Thank you so much for your interest in my blog. Every bit of support means so much. I will be updating this page during my 6 months in Argentina, so check back often to stay in touch.
Best,
Rebecca
